Tips to Prevent Home Theft During the Holidays

If you plan to be away from home during the holidays, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and National Crime Prevention Council offer resources to keep your home safe from theft.

  • Lock doors and windows – including garage doors.
  • Use automatic timers to turn on lights, a radio or television.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your home while you are away and be sure to have someone pick up your mail and newspapers to keep your home looking lived in. You can also stop mail delivery through an online request to the U.S. Postal Service.
  • Create an inventory of the valuable items in your home by taking photographs and making a list of serial numbers. An inventory may aid in the recovery of your items and may make insurance claims easier to file.
  • Do not post on social media that you are leaving town and wait to post photos until after you return from your trip.
  • Contact the Kent County Sheriff’s Office to sign up for its vacation house check service if you plan to be gone an extended period of time.
