Help Keep Your Water Pipes and Meter from Freezing

Water faucet (website)

During the winter, your water pipes and meter are more susceptible to freezing or breaking, especially when temperatures are near zero degrees or lower.

You can follow these tips to prevent frozen pipes and meters:
  • Run a pencil-sized stream from your faucet to prevent ice buildup. This is less expensive than repairing a broken pipe
  • Open cabinet and other interior doors where pipes or meters are located to help circulate warm air.
  • Wrap pipes in insulation or heat tape.

If a pipe freezes or breaks, locate the main shutoff valve in your home, turn it off and call a licensed plumber. You should never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or open flame. Instead, use a hair dryer, fan or exhaust from a vacuum.

If you have a water-related emergency or question about your water, call the Water Department at 616.732-6147.
