Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter

As winter approaches, the Kent County Road Commission has a number of vehicle tips and safety kit ideas to help you prepare for traveling in the cold and snowy months ahead.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order by:

  • Checking the condition of your tires or consider winter tires
  • Replacing wiper blades if needed
  • Filling up on antifreeze and window washer fluid
  • Ensuring your vehicle’s battery has a sufficient charge
  • Keeping your gas tank from being close to empty

Keeping an emergency kit in the vehicle is also important. It should include such items as:

  • A blanket and warm clothes
  • A flashlight
  • Jumper cables
  • Tow rope
  • Shovel
  • First aid kit
  • Bag of sand or cat litter for traction
  • Cell phone charger
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Water
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Reflective triangles

Michigan State Police also has a downloadable Auto Emergency Preparedness Kit Checklist to help you.
