Plainfield Charter TOWNSHIP CANDIDATE INFORMATION Plainfield Charter Township office positions to appear on the primary and general election ballot:

Supervisor - 1 Position
Clerk - 1 Position
Treasurer - 1 Position
Trustee - 4 Positions

Township candidates file at the Plainfield Charter Township Clerk's Office.  School, county offices and precinct delegates file with the Kent County Clerk's Office. 

To qualify for either township supervisor, treasurer, clerk or trustee, a person must be a township elector, but property ownership is not required. An elector is defined as someone 18 years of age, who is a U.S. citizen and has lived at least 30 days in the township for which they will serve.

By 4:00 p.m. April 21 : Candidates for partisan and nonpartisan offices (other than judicial candidates) file nominating petitions or fees in lieu of petitions if applicable, and an Affidavit of Identity for the August primary. Withdrawal deadline elapses at 4:00 p.m. on April 24. 

By 4:00 p.m., July 16: Candidates without political party affiliation seeking partisan office file qualifying petitions and an Affidavit of Identity for the November general election. Withdrawal deadline elapses at 4:00 p.m. on July 20. 

The type of petition you need depends on the type of filing. A $100.00 filing fee may be accepted in lieu of petitions for candidates with major party affiliation.  Affidavits must be notarized. If you would like the clerk's office to notarize your affidavit, call ahead to make sure there is a notary available upon your arrival. Please bring an appropriate photo ID.

All township candidates are required to file a Statement of Organization with the Kent County Clerk's office.

Candidates must withdraw, in writing, with their filing official by the dates below:
Major Party Candidates: Friday, April 24, 2020, by 4:00 p.m.

Precinct delegates must file with the Kent County Clerk's office.

An individual who wishes to seek nomination or election to a federal, state, county, city, township, village or school office with write-in votes is required to file a Declaration of Intent with the appropriate election official by 4:00 p.m. on the second Friday preceding the election.

Political Signs located in Plainfield Charter Township: 

A temporary sign related to a primary, general or special election, which displays the name, party or other related information of political candidates running for office, issues placed upon a ballot to be voted upon or other political issues. Without limitation, a campaign sign is not permitted in the public right-of-way.

  1. Size: Sign area of any single sign shall not exceed 12 sq. ft. and shall be setback a minimum of 5 ft from all lot lines.
  2. Number: No more than 4 signs on any single property and all such signs shall be located on private property. The total number of sign area for all signs utilized shall not exceed 32 sq. ft.
  3. Duration: Campaign signs are only permitted up to 60 days prior to an election/voting day, and all such signs shall be removed within 14 days after an election/voting day.
